In Today’s Blog, I am going to introduce my hometown Shri Chamkaur Sahib. It is a small town in Ropar District of Punjab, India. It is famous for its Sikhism related historical events.
PAST NAMES:
Before the visit of Shri Guru Gobind Singh in the year 1705, it was known as Garhi Chamkaur. Later, it came to be known as Chamkaur Sahib in due respect to Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s Visit. Few years ago, Government of Punjab changed its name to Shri Chamkaur Sahib due to religious city.
GEOGRAPHICAL AREA AND LOCATION:
Shri Chamkaur Sahib is located on the banks of Sirhind canal. Its Geographical location is 30° 53’N, 76° 25’E. It is connected to major cities of Punjab with roadways. It’s distance from Morinda is 15 KM, 16 Km from Ropar, 48 KM from Chandigarh, and 60 KM from Ludhiana.
DEMOGRAPHICS AND ADMINISTRATION:
As per census 2011 – 2021, population of this Nagar Panchayat city is 13, 920 of which 7,258 are males and 6,662 are females. Literacy rate of Shri Chamkaur Sahib is 79.76 %. In male it is 83.27% and 75.97% in female. Shri Chamkaur Sahib is a Nagar Panchayat city. It is divided into 13 Parts. Nagar Panchayat has administration over 2,842 houses.
HISTORY:
It is a religious place famous for the Battle between Khalsa led by 10th Guru of Sikhs and Mughals. In this battle, 42 Sikh Followers and Two Elder Sons of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji martyr. Many Gurudwaras built here represent the visit and stay of Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji with his 40 Sikhs, 5 Pyare and two elder sons. Consequently 6 Historical Gurudwaras are as follow:
You can reach Shri Chamkaur Sahib by Bus, train and Airway. Shri Chamkaur Sahib has its own Bus Station but only connecting to few big cities like Morinda, Ludhiana and Ropar. You can come via train to these cities and then can reach Shri Chamkaur Sahib. As it doesn’t have it’s own railway station.
International Airport at Chandigarh is the nearest Airport. Not only Chandigarh but In the same way Shri Chamkaur Sahib is connecting to Indra Gandhi International Airport, Delhi and Shri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport Amritsar.
